Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) District announces an opportunity to work as a Specialist I for the TRiO Educational Talent Search program.
Educational Talent Search (ETS) is a federally funded, national TRiO program that is committed to prepare and motivate low-income, first generation junior high and high school students for success in postsecondary education. ETS seeks students who have the desire, ability, and motivation to excel in their education.
APPLICATION PROCESS:
After review, suitable applicants will be invited by phone or email on or around Thursday, August 17, 2023 to participate in a skills assessment. Successful candidates will then be interviewed by a committee of approximately 3-5 individuals; these interviews are tentatively scheduled for August 24, 2023. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an interview. LTCC reserves the right to return to the applicant pool at any point during the recruitment process.
COMPENSATION:
Salary Range: LTCC offers a competitive compensation package that includes a starting placement salary of $39,155 to $43,233 annually, dependent on education and experience. There is potential to reach $50,133 annually, through step advancement plus longevity when appropriate. In addition to base salary, this position qualifies for extra bilingual (Spanish), masters or doctorate pay.

In addition to base salary, this position qualifies for extra bilingual (Spanish), masters or doctorate pay.
Benefits: Health and Welfare benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and long term disability. Several plan options maintain a zero monthly premium cost from the employee and include full coverage of a gold-level medical plan that, on average, covers 80% of healthcare expenses for a standard population. LTCC also matches 27% of an eligible employee’s salary and contributes it into a CalPERS pension account for qualifying employees.
Work-Life Balance: This position is 40 hours per week and 10 months per year, including summer and winter hours. Hours are expected to be Monday-Friday, generally within the hours of 8 am to 5 pm, hours may vary according to the needs of the program. This position is eligible for overtime compensation (non-exempt). This position may qualify for the telecommute pilot program, which allows employees the opportunity to telecommute for up to 20% of the work week.
LTCC provides a generous leave package including 16 paid holidays per year plus 10 days vacation (with the potential to reach 20 days through years of service) and 10 days sick leave per year. Furthermore, LTCC has made a commitment to full closures during holiday breaks and several weekends adjoining holidays to provide employees the ability to take advantage of holiday and vacation usage.

Definition:
Under the direction of the Director of TRIO, The TRiO Program Specialist serves either South Tahoe Middle School or South Tahoe High School with overall responsibility for managing the college’s TRiO programs: Educational Talent Search (ETS) or Upward Bound (UB). Perform a variety of specialized duties in the development and implementation of designated program functions and services; participate in related training, data collection and program evaluation functions; serve as a technical resource to program participants, students, and others concerning assigned services and functions.
Representative Duties:
Implement and manage middle or high school program activities pertaining to the objectives of the TRiO grant assigned: oversee academic tutoring, provide guidance on college and career preparation, provide information on college and scholarship applications, and other related services to middle and high school students from historically underserved backgrounds in order to succeed in higher education.

Recruit, enroll, and support a caseload of students, register all applicants in database and maintain files of program documents as well as documentation of each student contact.
Provide direct services to participants; organize and monitor participant follow-up activities.
Work as a team with TRiO, Lake Tahoe Community College, and Lake Tahoe Unified School District staff; coordinate the day-to-day workflow, schedule the work, and assist in the orientation and on the job training of TRiO tutors.
Conduct presentations on high school, college, and career preparation; provide financial aid information and assistance and economic literacy connections.
Plan and manage program activities/workshops/events; assist with project reports required by the U.S. Department of Education.
Establish and maintain various automated records and files for each student; perform data entry, prepare and maintain reports, correspondence, memorandum, and other written documents for the program; review and edit materials for accuracy; assist with special projects related to designated programs as assigned.
Compile, assemble, maintain and disseminate a variety of informational materials related to assigned programs, services and functions; accept, process, and evaluate a variety of program applications, forms, and documents.

Any combination equivalent to: two or more years of experience working with historically underserved middle or high school students in academic/outreach programs. Parallel experience includes outreach, recruitment, event planning, teaching, tutoring and program coordination, learning center or related area of education.
Knowledge of:
- Effective retention strategies and support services for middle/high school environments.
- Academic and outreach programs for underserved middle and high school students
- Secondary school graduation requirements as well as the college admissions process.
- Academic support services, including tutoring, college/career workshops and remedial courses.
- College entrance/transfer requirements, academic programs, career opportunities, financial aid and scholarship eligibility.
- Support service needs of economically and educationally underserved youth and an ability to establish rapport and empathy.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
- Public speaking techniques.
Ability to:
- Organize the day-to-day activities and operations of a project/program.
- Arrange multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
